Espuña

The history of Espuña goes back to 1947, when Esteve Espuña began to produce cold cut sausages to local recipes in a farmhouse in the Vall de Bianya area (in the county of la Garrotxa).

From then on, the company quickly expanded, and in 1964 a new factory was opened. Four years later, Espuña purchased the company GOU TERRADES, S.A. which manufactured Serrano ham.

In 1989 the mould-breaking launch of a new range of sliced products took place, which soon became the source of our company's largest turnover.
Between 1990 and 1992, Espuña remodelled its production facilities in order to obtain authorisation for trading in the European Community.

The purchase of the CUSCO, factory in Sentmenat (Barcelona) in 1992, ensured the increase of the company's productive capacity, with the production of butifarras, mortadellas and frankfurter sausages - the basic products of Espuña.

In 1998 Espuña acquired new technological facilities for the cold pasteurisation of meat products using High Pressure, the first of its type in the world. This technology is applied mainly to sliced products and tapas and eliminates bacteriological contamination of the products while keeping their original freshness intact until the end of their useful life.

Early 2000 saw the construction of a Serrano ham plant in Argentina, with a surface area of 3,100 m2 and a production capacity of 2,400 hams per week after an investment of 3.2 million Euros.

In May 2005 a new production plant was set up in Utrillas (Teruel- Spain).
This new plant has a total constructed surface area of 5,900 m2 and has 6 slicing lines, which provide a productive capacity of 25 million bags of sliced products per year (5 million kilograms). This plant has created 66 jobs.

Over the last few years, and in accordance with new consumption habits, Espuña has launched three new totally innovative product ranges onto the market. In 2002 we launched our Minute Tapas range, and in 2004 our Ñams (sliced tapas) Espuña range and this year our Minute Tapas Enrolladas range. These three ranges have a common factor: they are all quick and easy to prepare and have attractive packaging with new features.
